Featured Team –February
This month, Ringette Ontario would like to recognize an extraordinary team for our February ‘Team of the Month’ feature: The Upper Ottawa Valley U16A Team!
“We Will STAY FOCUSED and PUT IN EFFORT EVERY SHIFT! That has been the team motto since the beginning of the season for this small town U16A UOV team. Being a small association, they could only find enough players to fill the roster with 11 skaters and 1 goalie. Some girls on the team are playing at the competitive level for the very first time! With the help of the amazing coaching staff and the focus and effort of each individual player, these girls have become quite a team. With a short bench, the girls have all had to work very hard for their successes this season. Finding ice time can be challenging in the small town of Renfrew, Ontario. The girls only get ice time once a week and then try to pick up extra ice whenever they can.
Once a week the team meets for dryland training at the nearby high school where they engage in chalk talk and work on mental and physical preparedness for the games. This team has just finished their 4th tournament and at each tournament they have been faced with various illnesses and injuries. At 3 out of 4 tournaments they have welcomed call-up players from other associations across the province whom they have never met or played with before. Parents and coaches would agree that they have seen this team of girls grow and develop over the season and their hard work and dedication is paying off.
In the Mississauga Tournament they had 3 wins and a 1 tie in round robin play and in the Whitby Tournament they finished with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss. They have secured their place and will compete with the top teams at the ‘A” Provincials and they will continue to play and prepare according to their motto on the road to the Provincials…. FOCUS and EFFORT. I am an experienced ringette mom (8 years with 2 daughters playing ringette) and this was my daughter’s first time wearing the infamous pink Upper Ottawa Valley jersey. She will have to return to her home association next year but the friendships, memories, and skills she has developed will last a lifetime. WE WILL give FOCUS and EFFORT EVERY SHIFT!”
